The blood and gore of one of Lucifer’s nightmares wake me.

I bolt upright, unable to get the image of Godric’s face coated in blood from my mind.

Ever since the bond strengthened, I’ve woken to his nightmares. I dash for the bathroom and heave over the toilet, emptying my dinner from the evening before. My head pounds, and my stomach twists.

I know it’s not the nightmares making me throw up. I’ve been nauseous for days, and it’s getting worse.

Lucifer has been away for five days, trying to deal with the rebellion. The population of hell isn’t happy about him taking a human as a mate. Our mating bond is more vital than I ever understood. A prophecy says his mate is the key to them returning to heaven.

I find it hard to believe that I’m the key to anything.

The two times Lucifer has been away, the sickness has gotten worse. Once he returns, the sickness disappears, so it must be linked to the mating bond.

When I’m with Gabriel, it’s bearable. Since sleeping with Lucifer, Gabriel has been pushing me away. We haven’t talked about our mating bond. It’s a secret between us, but I’m unsure how long we can ignore it.

The thought of seeing him gives me the strength to get up from the cold floor. My legs are shaky as I turn on the faucet and splash cold water over my face. I sigh, feeling like I’m being torn apart. Gabriel returned from the front line yesterday, and it’s been marginally better.

I need to find him. Glancing in the mirror, I groan because I need a shower and, ideally, a makeover. I look like a mess. My usually bright eyes look dull, and my tan skin looks paler than normal. Walking to the large waterfall shower behind me, I turn it on and wait for the water to heat up.

My bedclothes feel looser on me. I’ve lost weight due to puking whenever Lucifer’s away. It’s not enough to be noticeable to others, but I can tell.

Shaking my head, I push my concerns from my mind, leaving my silk pajamas in a pile. I step into the water's warm embrace and spend ages under the spray.

Once finished, I turn off the shower and step out, wrapping myself in a plush towel.

Harry remains in hell but as my guest rather than a servant. Lucifer told him he can go home. Harry refused, despite my protest, saying he wouldn't leave me here.

I dress in my favorite lingerie set and select a casual emerald maxi dress that complements my eyes.

Lucifer promised he’d only be gone for five days at a time. He’ll return today, and I can’t wait to see him. Once I’m happy with my appearance, I walk out of the room and down the stairs toward the dining room.

The clink of cutlery against china echoes through the hall as I get close. My footsteps slow as I try to make out the voice. I can’t tell, so I step through the doorway.

My heart skips a beat when I meet Gabriel’s green eyes.
